Vertebral discs are gel-like shock absorbers that sit in between your bones.
Manipulation of the spine has been practiced throughout history.
There are countless examples of "bone-setting" found within various cultures.

Chiropractic was started in 1895 by D.D. Palmer in Davenport, Iowa, USA.

The word 'chiropractic' comes from Greek language and means, "to do by hand".

[chiro = hand, practic = to do]

A chiropractor takes care of your whole body, especially your backbone, with his hands.  He makes sure all the parts are working together properly.

For example, a problem with your knee affects your ankle and your low back because:

Toe bone connected to the foot bone
Foot bone connected to the leg bone
Leg bone connected to the knee bone...

A more profound appreciation for chiropractic occurs when you realize that bones are connected to soft tissue, including organs.
